Having never been to Switzerland before I was excited to explore it’s great mountains, cities, and lake shores. While everyone raves, and rightfully so, about it’s peaks, I found it’s lake shores to be the most beautiful. Our 6 days in Switzerland included a quick stop in Zurich, Luzern, a few days in Lauterbrunnen, nestled between the some of Switzerlands great peaks, a day trip to Bern, and my favorite city in Switzerland, Lausanne.
We flew from New York to Zurich and could not pass up the opportunity to explore, however briefly, the largest city in Switzerland. For me Zurich was a little disappointing. I wish it had a little more character and to me it felt like a modern city worth a 1 day visit.
With that said, the Fraumünster church was the highlight of Zurich because of Chagall’s 30′ tall stained glass windows. A close 2nd place was Lake Zurich which like all the lakes we visited added to the beauty of the city. Zurich has it’s share of museums with the Swiss National Museum being the one most worth visiting.
This lakeside city has painted bridges and a picturesque old town. It is a great springboard to Mount Rigi with its amazing sunrise vistas as well as Mount Pilatus with its luge ride and hiking trails. Luzern is situated where the Reuss River flows out of Lake Luzern. This is a city that is meant to explored by foot. A guided or pre-recorded walking tour is an absolute must.
The Swiss Alps
Any trip to Switzerland should include the Alps. Lauterbrunnen was our next stop during our 6 days in Switzerland. This small and quaint town located in a valley is a great springboard to the Jungfrau and Schilthorn. Anyone who likes skiing, hiking, and/or biking will have a blast here. The views while hiking or biking the many trails in this region are simply awe inspiring.
The Schilthorn peak, with its James Bond exhibit, and breathtaking views is definitely a must see. A train ride through the Eiger mountain to the Jungfraujoch, which at 11,333 feet, is Europe’s highest train station is also a top pick.
We decided to stop off in Bern for a few hours on our way to Lausanne and boy am I glad we did. Bern, the capital of Switzerland, has character rich covered arcades, a lively market square, and a delightful river scene. Bern is home to a picturesque bell tower and the Albert Einstein apartment museum where he formulated the theory of relativity. If you want an summer experience to remember, float down the Aare river by letting the water take you down stream and catch the poles meant to help swimmers stop.
Accidentally saving the best for last we finished our 6 Days in Switzerland in the lakefront city of Lausanne. Picture steep San Fransisco like streets with a true old town and a beautiful lakefront area that will remind you at times of the French Riviera. This was my favorite Swiss city by a long shot.
