Five castles were set up along this coast. They were designed to drive off pirates. When there were no more pirates, the villagers fished and grew grapes. The little towns grew and prospered. They are an amazing system of houses, gardens and grape vineyards hacked into the sides of the steep hills. The walled gardens have been compared to the Great Wall of China for complexity and ingenuity. Unlike the Wall, however, they were developed over centuries by ordinary people. Their goal was to make places for their gardens and vineyards as well as more places for houses. Although it is far from being an untamed wilderness, the area is a way to step into a slower, quieter way of life.
