Airalo: Use your phone in foreign countries for much less

What is Airalo?

Airalo is a global eSIM marketplace that provides travelers with affordable and convenient access to mobile data in over 200 countries and regions. Launched in 2019, the platform aims to eliminate the hassle and high costs associated with traditional roaming or purchasing local SIM cards. With Airalo, users can download digital SIM cards (eSIMs) directly onto their phones, enabling them to connect to local networks without needing physical SIM cards.

How It Works

The process of using Airalo is remarkably straightforward:

  1. Check Device Compatibility – Users must first ensure that their smartphones support eSIM technology, which is increasingly common in newer devices from Apple, Samsung, Google, and others.
  2. Choose a Plan – On the Airalo website or app, users select their destination and browse a range of data plans, from 1 GB for a few days to long-term packages with larger data allowances.
  3. Purchase and Install – Once a plan is purchased, users receive a QR code or can install the eSIM directly from the app. Setup typically takes just a few minutes.
  4. Activate and Go – After installation, the eSIM connects to a local network upon arrival, allowing users to access data immediately without searching for SIM vendors or dealing with foreign languages.

Key Benefits of Airalo

1. Cost-Effective

Traditional roaming charges can be exorbitant, with many carriers charging daily fees or inflated rates for overseas data. Airalo’s eSIM plans are often significantly cheaper, with competitive pricing tailored to local markets. Travelers can avoid unexpected bills while still enjoying consistent connectivity. For example, a 10 day trip overseas with AT&T’s plan would cost $120. With Airalo, you probably wouldn’t even spend $20.

2. Convenience

Gone are the days of standing in airport lines or hunting down SIM card shops in unfamiliar cities. Airalo’s digital delivery means you can install an eSIM before you even board your flight — no need for plastic SIMs or switching out cards.

3. Global Coverage

Airalo offers eSIMs for virtually every part of the world, including individual country plans, regional bundles (like Europe or Asia), and even global options that work in multiple countries. This flexibility makes it ideal for frequent travelers, digital nomads, and international business professionals.

4. Environmentally Friendly

By eliminating the need for plastic SIM cards and their packaging, Airalo contributes to a reduction in e-waste. As sustainability becomes a growing concern, digital solutions like eSIMs represent an eco-conscious shift in the tech industry.

Limitations and Considerations

While Airalo offers many advantages, it’s important to understand its limitations. eSIMs typically provide data-only services — meaning voice calls and SMS messages are not included. However, users can still communicate via internet-based apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime, Zoom, and others. Additionally, some countries have limited eSIM infrastructure or regulations that may restrict usage. It’s advisable to review compatibility and local laws before traveling.

I use Google Voice to make voice calls. I forward all of my calls to my Google Voice number which allows me to make and receive calls as normal. The only thing I’m missing is text messages to my primary number. I can still make and receive text messages to my Google Voice number.

The other thing to consider is that you will need a different eSIM for different countries. Also plan on using more data than you would normally. Not sure why that happens but that’s been my experience. You can use airplane mode if you want to save on data.

It’s also important to know that there are no contracts. You sign up for a certain amount of time and data. Once either of those things run out, its over. Of course, the app will let you know when you’re running low so you’re not just gonna be dropped. You’ll have plenty of time to top up.

You can test drive is for free (or almost free)

Not sure if this is right for you? You can test drive it for free! Use code JEFFRE0091 to sign up and you’ll get $3. It doesn’t sound like much but that’s the great thing about eSIMS through Airalo, they don’t cost much. You can sign up for the cheapest plan and it’ll be free or close to it with the code.
