Unlocking Elite Travel: A Guide to Hyatt’s Guest of Honor Award
For frequent travelers and World of Hyatt loyalists, the Guest of Honor (GOH) benefit stands out as one of the most generous and unique perks in any hotel loyalty program. Introduced by Hyatt as a way to extend elite privileges to others, the Guest of Honor award allows Globalist members to share their top-tier status with friends or family members—even when they aren’t traveling together. This course explores how the Guest of Honor award works, who’s eligible, and how to maximize its value.
What is the Hyatt Guest of Honor Award?
The Guest of Honor award is a benefit tied to Hyatt’s World of Hyatt loyalty program, specifically for those who reach Globalist status. It allows a Globalist to book a stay for someone else using either points or a Free Night Award, and grant that person access to nearly all the same perks they would receive if the Globalist were traveling themselves.
That includes:
- Complimentary room upgrades (including to standard suites)
- Free daily breakfast or club lounge access
- Waived resort and destination fees
- 4:00 p.m. late checkout (when available)
- Free parking on award stays
In essence, the recipient of a Guest of Honor booking experiences all the benefits of elite status—without needing to earn it themselves.
How Do You Earn Guest of Honor Awards?
As of 2024, Hyatt moved the Guest of Honor benefit into the Milestone Rewards structure, meaning members must reach specific thresholds to earn these awards:
- A Guest of Honor award is earned at 40, 60, 70, 80, 90, and 100 nights each calendar year.
This means a member could potentially earn up to six GOH awards annually, assuming they reach 100 nights. It also means that you could get a GOH with just 40 nights. Each award can be used once, and it can only be applied to an eligible free night booking—either via points or a free night certificate.
How to Use a Guest of Honor Award
To use the Guest of Honor award:
- Either gift the GOH to someone or use it to book a stay on their behalf.
- Book a stay using points.
- Call or message Hyatt customer service to apply the Guest of Honor benefit.
- The reservation will be flagged, and the recipient will receive Globalist-level treatment throughout their stay.
Note: GOH awards are not automatic and must be manually applied to the reservation.
Limitations and Considerations
- Guest of Honor stays must be award bookings (paid stays do not qualify).
- GOH awards are transferable—you can give them to anyone, but only one per reservation.
- The program does not apply to third-party bookings (e.g., through Expedia or Amex Travel).
- Awards must be redeemed before their expiration, typically one year from issuance.
Why It’s So Valuable
The Guest of Honor award is considered one of the most customer-friendly elite benefits in the hotel industry. While most hotel programs limit elite benefits strictly to the member themselves, Hyatt encourages generosity—letting members “gift” their perks to others. This is especially helpful for families, corporate travel arrangers, or anyone who wants to treat loved ones to a luxury experience without being there in person.
For savvy travelers, combining Guest of Honor benefits with promotions or Free Night Awards can result in thousands of dollars in value over time.
Trading for GOH awards
Wouldn’t it be great to use a GOH without accumulating 40 nights? Well the good new is that there is a work around. Hyatt allows you to transfer any award to other people which has created a community of trading. Free night awards and other awards might be of interest to people that have a GOH that they aren’t going to use. You can trade the awards you don’t want with someone that has a GOH. We trade away all of our GOHs in exchange for Free Night Awards. There is an entire Facebook group for traders.
Final Thoughts
Hyatt’s Guest of Honor award isn’t just a thoughtful loyalty perk—it’s a standout in a competitive industry. Whether you’re a frequent Globalist or lucky enough to be on the receiving end, the Guest of Honor benefit transforms a good hotel stay into a truly elite experience.
