Save money when buying two or more Airline tickets by purchasing separately

Not all airline seats are created equal, even those in the same class. For pricing purposes, tickets are grouped in “buckets”. When you are just shopping for one ticket, you’ll see the best price at that time. But if you are searching for more than one ticket the system will bump you up to the next fare bucket if there aren’t enough tickets to cover both passengers. In other words, the system will not give you the cheap ticket and the other passenger the more expensive ticket. You’ll both get the more expensive ticket.

The system is even stranger than that. If you book the tickets separately but at the exact same time they will usually price out the same. So much for those fare buckets huh? These buckets aren’t as rigid as you would think. Of course, this doesn’t always happen. Sometimes one ticket is $200 and two tickets booked together is $400. Always start with one ticket and work your way up from there to see if there’s a price difference.

Here’s a real world example. As you can see, we saved $63 by booking separately at the same time! You can then call the airline and link the reservations together so they know you are traveling together.
